Top Ten Tuesdays is hosted weekly by The Broke and Bookish and anyone is free to participate! This week’s subject is top things that will make me want to read a book immediately. I usually have to read a whole summary before I want to read a book, there aren’t very many things that will make me “auto-read” a book. So some of these will kind of be cheating. But I hope you enjoy this list anyway!
- Magic in the real world
I love how different authors fit their world to mold around ours. Of course there’s something so exciting as a whole world being hidden from yours and waiting to be found. All those worlds we actually want to delve into and explore in real life are largely “magic in the real world” books like: Harry Potter or Chronicles of Narnia
Favorite magic in the real world books: The Night Circus, Shades of Magic trilogy (#1, #2, #3), Every Heart A Doorway - Any hint of a love triangle
I mostly love these stories because they are So. Damn. Angsty. I love witnessing it through pages; it’s like better than soap operas or The Bachelor/ette (don’t @ me). I love seeing the different perspectives and seeing how each of the parties is reacting to every new development. It’s just so fun!
Favorite love triangle reads: The Infernal Devices trilogy (#1, #2, #3), Something About Us, - Any main characters who likes to read
I think this helps me have some special connection to the heroine/hero. I think you’d be hard pressed to find any reader who DOESN’T like their MCs to read!
Heroines/Heros who like to read: The Infernal Devices(#1, #2, #3), Cath (Fangirl), - Time traveling
After much perusing of my Goodreads shelf, I realized I have A LOT of time travel books, so I guess time travel? This is kind of crossing into “magic in the real world” though if I’m honest. Although I do like to see how different authors take on time travel, especially with trying to get around all the paradoxes. Although sometimes I have a hard time understanding them!
Favorite time travel books: The Girl From Everywhere duology (#1, #2), Passenger duology (#1, #2), The Time Travelers Wife - Childhood friends
This is a trend I see more in manga/anime than I see in books, but I still LOVE this trope. It’s so endearing to see how relationships change between two characters. I adore them and can’t get enough.
Favorite childhood friends books: Ramona Blue (My review’s here!), Ao Haru Ride (Blue Spring Ride) - Graphic novels
OK, OK, we’re kind of stretching it here. But graphic novels are so fun and I take ANY chance I can to promote them. I love manga, webtoons and anime, and graphic novels are the same kind of idea. I love seeing the different drawing techniques and styles that artists bring and so much work goes into graphic novels, they definitely don’t receive enough love.
Favorite graphic novels: See this list for graphic novels suggestions, see this list for manga/webtoon suggestions
Well that’s it for now, I told you I don’t have a lot of “auto-read” requirements! Let me know what are some of your “auto-read” requirements in the comments below! And let me know if we have any in common!
I love manga too! Promote away! Childhood friends is a really good one too…

Nothing is better than Manga honestly. I’m so sad because I’m waiting for some to be scanned T_T

LOL! Yes! For those series that aren’t translated and published in the US scans are all we have… I feel for you. I don’t read scans that often because there is so much published I haven’t gotten to but when I do it’s so easy to just read everything they have available!

I know! Plus I’ve really gotten into webtoons lately and I’m a lot more selective about what mangas I read so sometimes I can’t find what I’m looking for in the stuff that’s been serialized.

I totally agree with some of these! Time travel and childhood friends for sure! Thanks for the post

Childhood friends has the potential for so much! YES PLEASE. More of these!

I like magic in the real world, book loving characters, and childhood friends as well! So many people hate love triangles so putting one in as a reason to love a book is so cool I like think if done right! So great things for sure! My Top Ten

I know, there’s so much hate for love triangles but I just LOVE THEM SO MUCH. Like the drama, I’m here for that.

I know! And the different ways authors explain magical events in the non-magic world. Like natural disasters or something like that!

Oh yes, a character who loves to read is such a great draw to us bookworms. 😀

I love Cath so much because she is like us with Harry Potter! She’s so relatable!

Childhood friends is an awesome one! Magical realism can be a bit hit or miss for me, I have loved some, but there have also been some I haven’t been so keen on. I love main characters who love to read too!

I think my favorite magical realism book is probably The Night Circus, for as much as it’s world building as the writing! But there’s also been a couple I didn’t care for as much.

See I wasn’t a big fan of The Night Circus, the writing was just a tad overboard for me.

I too love magic in the real world.

I love how it fits together! And how the author hides it from mundanes, muggles; non-magical world people, WHOEVER.

You’ve got a great list! I totally agree with you on magic in the real world. It’s so fun to think that maybe…somewhere out there…magic really DOES exist.
LikeLike
That’s what I keep telling myself! If authors can think of so many different ways magic hides itself from “non-magic beings” the chances of it actually being out there are pretty high, hehe

Good list. I agree that you have to read a books summary first, although I do have two authors on my list. That just because they can really be depended on to have books I like. And I wish Manga weren’t so expensive. It’s so easy to binge read. My favorite Manga is an old one called Imadoki.

I think I’ve heard of Imadoki! I’m so grateful more mangas are being serialized. Now libraries have a lot of volumes!

Magic in the real world is such a good one! I love Harry Potter for that reason, and Shades of Magic is one of my favorite series. Have you already read ACOL?
YESSS to main characters who love to read! It’s upsetting when authors, who presumably love books themselves, write characters who hate to read. I’m all about nerds!
Time traveling was on my TTT as well! There are some recommendations listed in my post. 🙂

His plot line is my favorite!! I love how Schwab developed his character. That ending was perfect, though.

I know! His character arc is GOALS. But the ending was perfectly saddening!! I also have a lot of questions after the ending! There were too many loose ends

Which hopefully means that we’ll get another series!!!

YES! I went to a signing and she said this story is closed, but if she writes future books in this world we might hear about characters from SOM!

*crosses all fingers*
Why would she leave the ending so open if she didn’t want to write more?! Haha.
