Top Ten Tuesdays was created by The Broke and Bookish, but is now hosted weekly by That Artsy Reader Girl and anyone is free to participate! This week’s topic is characters that remind me of myself. I’m going to be really vague with this one. It feels a little too much like bragging. Like “I’m like this character because of this and they’re so amazing I love them so much” haha. Yeah, it’s pretty much like bragging and I feel awkward. I think it’ll be more like character’s I relate to? So I’ll try to be as objective as possible but you know… I’m human and mess up too.
Cath from Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
Cath has anxiety and I think it was the first depiction of anxiety, specifically social anxiety, I had ever seen. It helped me learn a lot about myself and helped me reflect on my behaviors. So even though Rainbow Rowell is not my favorite author and can be problematic, it still has a close place in my heart.
Zayneb from Love From A to Z by S.K. Ali
I think I identify most with Zayneb’s sense of justice. She sees injustice in the world and is dissatisfied with how and when people are treated unfairly. But I also think she’s a very empathetic character who seriously considers what everyone has to say. I’ll say I try to be empathetic with everyone, but it’s a serious work in progress.
Lira from To Kill A Kingdom by Alexandra Cristo
I don’t identify with Lira a lot a lot. I really like her because I think she’s such a great character; she’s so strong, but also angry a lot. I think I identify with that anger quite a bit, especially when I’ve dealt with a customer at work who was particularly rude to me.
Mei from American Panda by Gloria Chao
Mei is inherently a people pleaser, and I definitely identify with that a lot. Especially when it comes to family and work. I try to straddle the line and make sure I’m in good standing with everyone at work and not take too much of a side when issues arise.
Anyway, this wasn’t a very long list, but I more identify with characters in certain moments; and less of the entire character as a whole. So it can be a little hard to find a character I’m very similar to.
Great list! Lots of Cath from Fangirl this week. I still haven’t read anything from Rowell yet but I do have the book. I’m determined to get to it this summer!

Fangirl is really good, but it’s not my favorite Rainbow Rowell. It’s hedged out just a bit by Landline, which I would really recommend if you’re looking to read Rowell.

Great list! I haven’t read most of these books but the characters sound very interesting. I agree with you on Cath though, I learned a lot from her as well.

Zayneb is so angry and I love her for it. I love that it stems from her empathy for others, even if she has her own blind spots. Great list!

YES! Zayneb is one of my very recent favorite characters. I know A to Z just came out, but I’m already ready for Ali’s next book haha

It is hard to find that one character that shows who you are. There is always something different. I”m glad that Cath could help you figure some things out about yourself. 🙂

Thank you so much Annemieke! It is really hard to find a character that completely embodies you, people are so multi-faceted.
