Top Ten Tuesdays was created by The Broke and Bookish, but is now hosted weekly by That Artsy Reader Girl and anyone is free to participate! This week’s topic is new authors I read in 2018. I read so many standalones, it’s really not hard for me to pick some favorite new authors from last year. I tend to read more standalones than series (RIP me) because I lean more towards contemporary. I read so many authors that I haven’t before last year and so many of them were so good! Alright, here’s to hoping I can narrow it down!
- Uzma Jalaladdin (Ayesha at Last)
I love love love Jalaladdin’s Pride and Prejudice retelling. It’s everything I want in a book. Swoon-worthy heroes who turn out to be heroes and villains, I’m so excited for what Uzma writes next and maybe we’ll see more of Ayesha and Khalid!
- Chica Umino (Sangatsu No Lion (March Comes in Like a Lion))
I am obsessed by this manga and the beautiful art and relationships between the characters. They’re so precious and lovely, I can’t wait to read more about them!
- Adib Khorram (Darius the Great is Not Okay)
Khorram’s honestly and sensitivity towards family relationships and nuances is something unique and wonderful in the YA world. I loved reading this non-romance story about love.
- Christina Lauren (Autoboyography)
This was the first book I read by Christina Lauren, but definitely not the last. I read 2-3 books them this year and each was more enjoyable than the last. I’m so excited to read their new book later this spring!
- Holly Black (The Darkest Part of the Forest)
In anticipation of knowing The Cruel Prince would be coming out later that year, at the very beginning of the year I tried Coldest Girl in Coldtown, which I ended up dropping–but also The Darkest Part of the Forest, which I absolutely loved. It’s clear after The Cruel Prince and Darkest Part of the Forest Holly Black does faerie the best.
- Julian Winters (Running with Lions)
Running with Lions was one of the first books of the year I remember loving so much and feeling so much joy while reading. I really can’t wait for the next book from Winters!
- Helen Hoang (The Kiss Quotient)
- Min Jin Lee (Pachinko)
I think this was one of the most memorable novels I read this year. I loved the simplicity and elegance of the writing style which also adds to the story.
- Thi Bui (The Best We Could Do)
I really loved Bui’s family memoir The Best We Could Do about her family’s journey fleeing Vietnam and taking refuge in the United States. It was not a fun read, but I really enjoy graphic novel memoirs and this was no exception.
- Alisha Rai (Hate to Want You)
Alisha Rai is one of my favorite romance writers. I’m super picky about what romance authors I read and she is exceptional. I’ve so far just read her Forbidden Hearts series and really enjoyed all of them. I can’t wait for her new book this year The Right Swipe!
