• Hmm… Megan’s got a little bit of a mean streak…
  • HELLO LI, you’re very cute and shy and adorable
  • “It’s like they’re just letting me live here for the year before I go to college. Before they have the family they want.” This is heartbreaking and so sad.
  • If this “puddle reaching above the sidewalk” seems unrealistic to me I’ve been away from Seattle for too long.
  • Adorkable boy Owen is certified adorkable.
  • Oh dear, now we have two potential LI and an ex in the room and they’re ALL part of the drama production?? Please tell me I’m not starting another “Save the Date” where it’s page after page after PAGE of drama.
  • I thought Anthony might be just another character. But he’s the gay best friend and can we just NOT with that stereotype?
  • Poor Owen, just when he was starting to like Megan, Will just swoops in. I don’t even get half the Shakespeare references they’re throwing around.
  • I mean I don’t really like the name Owen, but I really love him a lot. He’s so sweet and caring and thoughtful.
  • Owen has a GIRLFRIEND? Curiouser and curiouser.
  • Well, your “first” is one way to look at it. But I’m thinking this is a semi-flawed way to look at it.
  • “A play is breathing right in front of you—it refuses to be stopped.” I really love this; it’s very poetic.
  • Ah, Owen needs help with his play writing—Proximity. Check and mate.
  • Owen is so observant. I love him so much.
  • “On the bed, I lean a little closer and look up at him through smoldering, half-lidded eyes. ‘Ah,’ he says almost immediately.” I bet he fell for her a little bit right then.
  • “It’s easier to be the one letting go,” sad day…
  • “‘You know exactly who you want to be, and you never pretend to be someone you’re not. It’s inspiring. Being around you—‘ He looks up sharply, then shakes his head.” STRIKE TWO.
  • WHY IS SHE KISSING WILL when she clearly wants to be with Owen, non-judgmental Owen who is sweet and nice and didn’t just shit on her passion?
  • How can physical stuff be private and PG-rated lol?
  • “With a guy who looks like Will, I know I wouldn’t,” Trouble in paradise with perfect Madeline and Tyler? Hmmm
  • He’s sitting on the couch with NO parents home and a pretty girl invited him over? Is he even a teenage boy lol?
  • Megan kind of treats herself like shit. It’s really sad.
  • One thing I love about Megan though is she really is hilarious. It’s finally the confident girl and shy boy done right. I’m in awe.
  • “‘I suppose not,’ he says softly, his eyes averted almost pointedly as if he wants them anywhere but on me.” STRIKE THREE
  • Hmmm, I WONDER WHO THIS CASUAL DATE IS GOING TO BE. Here’s what’s going to go down: she’s going to wake up and drop whatever shit with Will and then “OH NO” she doesn’t have a date. Better go for the next closest personal friend who isn’t in a relationship who right now happens to be OWEN
  • 1,000 points to Kaeley!!!
  • Okay maybe not 1,000, but I’ll take 10 please and thank you.
  • Okay, I get that Will is inexperienced and not use to attention but right now he’s being a certifiable asshole. Like everyone knows if you’re almost going to have sex with someone and you haven’t set any “no strings attached rules” you talk to them
  • Okay, NOW 1,000 points to me.
  • Megan is really like Puck, the fairy in A Midsummer Night’s dream lol
  • “‘No,’ I say, trying to sound undisturbed, ‘I’m loud, sarcastic, boy-crazy—’
‘—thoughtful, perceptive, witty,’ Owen finishes. He doesn’t look away…” YOU’RE OUT OWEN BOY.
  • Oh wow, Madeline is not so perfect after all. Hooking up with your best friend’s boyfriend disqualifies you even from the good friend category.
  • Oh God, Will isn’t at Megan’s Senior Showcase because he’s with Alyssa…
  • Megan and Owen really are so cute together. At least we won’t have to worry about the cliche “girlfriend shows up while we’re hooking up” or whatever since Owen’s girlfriend live in Italy.
  • Looool, why is Eric in the girl’s bathroom??
  • Yeah, Megan, Owen does have a girlfriend. And you JUST found out you were cheated on so don’t get comfy with him in a hurry. Owen seriously needs to own his feelings and finally break-up with Cosima.
  • Okay but there’s something extremely romantic in, the girl tying a boy’s. Like in Up.
  • Oh jeez. Will just really is a huge asshole who doesn’t know how to treat anyone right. “Cover for me bro” OK
  • “You read what I wrote. Isn’t it obvious how I feel about her?” FINALLY, THEY’RE GONNA TALK ABOUT IT
  • NO DON’T KISS REMEMBER CORISMA or whatever her name is.
  • “Owen and I don’t talk for another week” T_T
  • Owen is going to walk in while she’s putting on her costume, I can feel it.
  • WHY THE FUCK ARE ALL THESE BOYS LEADING HER ON?
  • I can’t believe the “teenagers get married young” joke wasn’t about Utah.
  • I mean I had a feeling Will was really getting with Alyssa but I was hoping it wasn’t true.
  • I really appreciate the care that’s going into this sex scene between Megan and Owen. So here’s the thing about sex in YA (I feel strongly about this I even wrote a long post about it), it’s usually badly done. But here’s what I like about this scene. Sometimes sex in YA feels forced, but because the pattern of Megan hooking up, it doesn’t feel like “reward sex” like “Oh finally they get together, the most important thing they do is have sex and that’s their whole relationship.” And also Megan and Owen have already established their relationship. SO, I appreciate this whole thing.
  • Hmmm. Alyssa hasn’t returned to the room. I guess that means she’s gonna get caught and Megan will play Juliet again.
  • 7/10—I really loved the ending, with the family and Megan and Owen together. I also like how the friendships are done in this book. I think it’s really valuable and Megan has a pretty good arc in terms of learning to give people the chances they deserve and not to give people chances who don’t deserve them. We see Megan learn lessons not just at the end of the book but in the middle too which I really enjoyed. Overall, just a really great book.
    • The one change I wish this book had is that it took place in college instead of high school. Not saying that high schoolers can’t be mature, but all the characters seemed a lot more college-like, than a bunch of 17-18 year olds.
