• I was not expecting this to be told in third person, idk why but I like it that way.
  • Hmmm, so when is she going to discover when and how to use her magical powers?
  • I mean I like Wei, but at the same time, he seems slightly pompous. Like he always treats her well, but also like an object.
  • Yes, victims escaping abuse. Yes.
  • I’m so sad her and Wei aren’t going to work out. When they’re alone they are so innocent and pure together. I’m also nervous to find out how/why he decides to leave her or if he dies or is killed or… THERE ARE SO MANY POSSIBILITIES.
  • You are no one’s possession. Break free.
  • I simultaneously love how she’s taking control and also have so much anxiety about everything. I love the writing. It balances the tension perfectly. Also the way Wei always seeks for control is grinding in my nerves.
  • Xifeng leading them to the place where soldiers train reminds me of Gina from B99: If people knew how smart I was it would be harder to manipulate them.
  • I have so much stress about palace politics jeez. Someone save me.
  • I’m really nervous Kang is going to betray her. I know he’s fine so much for her but still…
  • Lady Sun is out of control with all her play at manipulation.
  • I really liked the crown prince and I was hoping she would end up with him or something.
  • Ugh, reading the part where she eats Lady Sun’s heart is just wrong.
  • Well all this is moving along quite swimmingly. I’m wondering if she’s going to kill the emperor or just rule beside him as an equal?
  • The tension between Xifeng and the Emperor. Hot damn.
  • Kang’s quote about opportunity: “there is only opportunity, and those too afraid to grasp it for themselves’ reminds me of J.K. Rowlings quote about good and evil. “There is no good and evil, only power and those too weak to seek it.”
  • 7/10—Wow I LOVED this book! It’s so interesting and I love Xifeng as a main character. She’s not exactly a heroine but I love her all the same. I cannot wait for the second one. It’s so far away!!
