• So fair, I don’t feel any strong attachment to Celaena, but the book is still young (only like 50 pages in folks).
  • OK I keep thinking it’s really weird she’s supposed to be an assassin but then stares at herself for 5 minutes in the mirror and also cares about her breast size but then I feel like a terrible person because of course those things aren’t mutually exclusive.
  • So she has PTSD, that is certainly understandable, I wonder how it will affect her character.
  • So faeries are all magical creatures, and fae are specifically the immortal humans, cunning, good looking, fast strong etc? What is the difference, can someone help me out?
  • No Dorian, you’re a piece of baggage.
  • Obviously Chaol is secretly awake when you think he’s asleep.
  • So far not as much pretifying prose, at least that I’ve noticed.
  • So you’re telling me, she’s the ONLY women in 23 or so competitors. SERIOUSLY? THis is a flipping fantasy book!
  • Nehemia is my absolute fav. Can they please ride off into the sunset together.
  • I ship Celaena and Nox, don’t @ me.
  • What is saints name is Samhuinn and why aren’t we being told any specific besides temple visits and offerings. Why is this important?
  • WHY ARE ALL THE MEN IN THIS BOOK TERRIBLE HUMAN BEINGS??? AND ALSO THE WOMEN.
  • I’m honestly confused. I though people said SJM has no diversity but Nehemia is black?? Can someone explain this to me, or does she get killed off? I’m sincerely asking because I want to know.
  • Nehemia is the definition of friend goals.
  • OMGOSH Dorian, why are you in her bedroom with knocking or something??? Like, did your arms suddenly become paralyzed so you can’t move them for like 5 seconds or do you just insist on harassing all women?
  • I don’t understand the logic with the tomb and how she knows it’s a Havilliard tomb. Also how does NO ONE else in this castle, including their descendants not know where the Havilliard tomb is?
  • So there is a reason for Samhuinn to exist? But why are we finding out spirits can cross like right now instead of when Chaol announced it’s Samhuinn?
  • I LOVE that Celaena is training Nox, because of course that makes perfect sense.
  • OK was anyone else extremely embarrassed by reading the scene where she teaches herself to play pool? BECAUSE I WAS.
  • How are Chaol and the rest of all his cronies NOT realizing these attacks are related and intentional? Jeez, he’s so stupid, these are obviously related. The literal same signs are at the crimes scenes. OMGOSH.
  • Also Dorian not caring if the murders were intentional or not is despicable. Someone died and you’re more worried if you can kiss Celaena. This is class privilege at its finest. Monarchy’s suck everyone.
  • Is Nox going to turn out evil? OMGOSH, he’s the murderer *drowns in tears as ship burns down*
  • Oh Chaol, why is it so obvious to me and not you it’s a champion who’s attacking AND has more to loose than a stupid sponsor!
  • Way to be cryptic Elena. She doesn’t know the evil but is leading Celaena to answers? Keep an eye on your right, I can only assume she’s talking about the secret passageway. but then also go down the dark tunnel again? Also is there some rule everyone has to be mysterious when visiting the living? Also wasn’t Samhuinn like a million years ago? I thought she was only able to appear because of it? dd
  • UGH. Gross Dorian. She already said she doesn’t feel well. You already know she threw up. Go away. Now.
  • OMG, find a servant to play with you if you’re bored. Not a sick person.
  • “It can’t be that bad.” OMGOSH. Are you serious. F you Dorian. You’re a man, how would you know what menstruation feels like?
  • Also, Chaol’s reaction too. he’s not off the hook. Why doesn’t ANYONE believe she’s sick? Why don’t either of them listen to her when she tells them to effing go away? Why do they BOTH insist on bursting into her rooms, and talking up a storm when she’s told both of them multiple times to leave? ASIENK.D,KJAE—PEOPLE. In this particular incident though MEN.
  • Ugh, Dorian is so controlling, say this, read that. Dance a jig and don’t worry that Chaol would have seen that as an attack and it would have repercussions for you and lessen his trust. Entitled bastard.
  • Oh, and how Dorian is judging her for reading romance and whatever the hell she feels like? His highness couldn’t be more of a douche.
  • Pff. Masked ball of course you’re going, don’t be a ninny.
  • But I mean of course.
  • The back cover says “two men lover her” but Chaol is kind of a close friend. He might care for her, but romance is kind of a weak argument IMHO.
  • OK, so Dorian and Celaena kissed, but no amount of ~good~ kissing or handholding can cover up the face that Dorian has abusive tendencies and is a complete asshat. Please tell me this is part of his character arc and he’s going to have an awakening in some coming book.
  • Again, why does Dorian think it’s OK to just waltz into her room without knocking? Damnit, where is Philippa?
  • With a name like Nox I guess I should be surprised he lasted this long. *glum face* he’s way better than Dorian.
  • Also I’m sorry for the literal 300 words of Dorian bashing but I cannot stand his guts.
  • The end fight between her and Cain is disorienting to her, obviously, but it shouldn’t be for me. After all this is being told in third person, so the fact I don’t even quite understand what happened says a bit about writing and execution. Although I do think Maas has done a decent job with Celaena dealing with her PTSD.
  • Also, a rare picture of the King of Adarlan has graced my blog, check him out below.

  • 5/10—In conclusion, the execution is what really shines in this story. Plenty of books featuring assassins including but not limited to The Orphan Queen, Graceling, The Hunger Games (basically), Grace Mercy have featured similar story lines. But with the exception of Graceling, I think the world building and writing is superior to most other books with similar story lines. I liked it, I enjoyed it. The writing was OK, and I think it’s actually better, and more clear/concise, than ACOTAR and ACOMAF. The ending interests me to read the next one, which I already have put on hold at the library. Yay me! IMHO, it’s a bit overhyped.
